An Apprenticeship is a way to work for an employer, get paid, and gain a qualification at the same time. 

There are over 280 types of Apprenticeship and over 1,500 different job roles – anything from Engineering and Boat Building to Veterinary Nursing and Accountancy.  More and more companies are starting apprenticeship schemes with new job roles, too.

 Apprenticeships are available at different levels:

Higher levels tends to mean you need more qualifications to apply.  The qualifications you get from an apprenticeship can vary a lot, so it’s important to know what you will get:

  • Intermediate level Apprenticeship (Level 2) – equivalent to five GCSE passes.
  • Advanced level Apprenticeship (Level 3) – equivalent to two A level passes.
  • Higher Apprenticeship (Levels 4, 5, 6 & 7)- equivalent to a Foundation degree or above
  • Degree Apprenticeship (Levels 6 & 7)- equivalent to a Bachelors or Masters Degree

Who can apply for an Apprenticeship?

You can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school or after you have left school. To start one, you’ll need to be:

  • 16 or over
  • Living in England
  • Not in full-time education (college)


How much will I get paid as an Apprentice?

Wages for apprentices can vary a lot.  There are minimum rates set by the government, but some employers choose to pay more than this.  Visit the .gov website for more information.


How to apply for an Apprenticeship

There are a number of ways that you can search and apply for apprenticeships, but the main source of apprenticeship vacancies is the National Apprenticeship Website.  You need to sign up to the website to apply, but this is free.
